Nepali citizens who are in the United States as of June 24, 2015 are eligible to apply for Temporary Protected Status (TPS). Today, the Department of Homeland Security announced that Nepali citizens may be granted up to 18 months of TPS if they satisfy all eligibility criteria.. This includes demonstrating that they have been both "continuously physically present" and "continuously residing" in the US since June 24, 2015. DHS made this designation because of the devasation that resulted from the April 25th earthquake and the numerous aftershocks that struck Nepal.

The TPS designation means that during the designated period, eligible Nepali nationals will not be removed from the US and may received an Employment Authorization Document. TPS status will be in effect through December 24, 2016.

The application period begins June 24, 2015 and runs through December 21, 2015.

Applicants will undergo security checks and individuals with certain criminal records or who pose a security threat to national security will not be eligible for TPS.
