Columbus Law Firm Defends Employee Rights
Attorneys are committed to justice in the workplace
Many state and federal laws guarantee basic rights for employees and job applicants, including the right to a safe work environment and the right to a workplace free from discrimination and harassment, the right to receive minimum wage and overtime wages (depending on the occupation) and the right to engage in protected concerted activity.
For example, prospective employers cannot, ask a job applicant certain family-related questions during the hiring process. It is also unlawful for an employer to conduct credit and background checks of prospective employees without their permission. Employers may not declare a complete prohibition on the discussion of terms and conditions of employment. At Adams & Liming, LLC, we do more than simply represent clients in employment law cases. We are advocates for those who have been mistreated, and we strive to protect employee rights throughout Ohio.
Workplace right to privacy
In the workplace, employees have a right to privacy in their personal possessions, including handbags or briefcases, and the contents of storage lockers accessible only by the employee. Employees may also have a right to privacy in their telephone conversations or voicemail messages. On the other hand, employees have very limited rights to privacy in their e-mail messages and Internet usage while using the employer’s computer system. This is a tricky area of law that changes often.
What are my rights under USERRA?
Employment law attorney Sharon Cason-Adams served in the Air National Guard and believes strongly in protecting the rights of members of the military. The Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act (USERRA) prohibits discrimination in employment because of service in the military, including the Reserves and National Guard.
USERRA prohibits an employer from denying any benefit of employment on the basis of an employee’s membership or application for membership in the uniformed services. USERRA also protects the right of veterans, reservists and National Guard members to reclaim their civilian employment after military service or training.
Military members have made enough sacrifices without having to worry about whether they will have jobs when they return from deployments. At Adams & Liming, LLC, we are dedicated to helping military members protect their jobs.
